Say Cheese

Every year about this time, I start hearing the pains of my clients who are trying to get the perfect holiday photo.  You know how it is, you want the perfect iconic photo card that your friends and family will save for years.  The card that they want to show their own friends and family because yours is just so perfect.  But somehow your Norman Rockwell moment has turned into kids screaming,  the dog barking and you pulling out your hair.  Doesn’t make for a great photo… or does it?

I always tell my clients when they are deciding on their holiday photo that it is more important to show your love for each other then to show your perfect poses. Some of my favorite cards that we’ve designed throughout the years have been the photos where life’s moments are captured.  The photo where the kids are jumping around like lunatics and the mom and dad are kissing on the couch while the “crazy” happens around them….  the holiday greeting “May peace be with you this Holiday season.”  Another favorite was two twin boys, one who was smiling, the other who was crying… the holiday greeting “Guess who was naughty and who was nice.”

I decided to ask my new friend, Jessica Lorren, an amazing photographer and fellow blogger for some tips to help you capture your family’s special moments for your holiday card this year.  Jessica’s speciality… Organic Photography… perfect for holiday photos and life’s special moments.  And… Jessica travels, so give her ring.  You will absolutely love her!  And if you are looking for the perfect holiday card… check out our selection on our website… www.rockpaperscissor.com!

Me:  “Jessica, explain what Organic Photography is.”
Jessica:  “Clients always ask me that very question.  I usually tell them that it is the art of capturing the unscripted natural moments that make life beautiful. When you reflect those moments, the ones that give you the warm fuzzies, the images that play through your mind aren’t usually images of you and your loved ones posing in the grass in matching outfits. They’re more often giggles, smiles or even funny faces that reveal the inner and outer beauty. That’s organic photography. Capturing the essence of the real beauty your life holds.”

Me:  “I love it!  It seems so simple… so why does everyone get so stressed by all of this?
Jessica:  “It’s like you said, they get so stuck in the Norman Rockwell moment, that they don’t let themselves relax and just be.  That’s why having a photographer, like myself, help you out is great because we can capture those moments for you.”

Me:  “Can you give us some tips?”
Jessica:  “Of course!  I have compiled my three favorite tips for cultivating those organic moments and creating beautiful images for you to enjoy year after year.  Here you go:

Tip 1:  Hugs & Kisses:  One of my favorite parts of a family session is when I can suggest a spontaneous group hug or for everyone to kiss mommy or daddy on the count of three; the shots that result are fun and adorable 100% of the time. How can you be involved with such a love ambush without a huge smile on your face?

2) Tickles & Tackles: This works great with kids of all ages, especially boys. Tickle the little ones, tackle the big ones. You are guaranteed to get genuine smiles and hilarious facial expressions.

3) Favorite Places: I always ask my clients to share with me what they enjoy as a family. Maybe it’s laying in the grass, playing at the park. Whatever it is, it’s a great way to capture images of them being themselves, doing what they love.

  1. [...] Have I mentioned that I love meeting new people? I do. Especially new people in the Nashville area. Specifically Lauren Rauter, owner of Franklin’s Rock Paper Scissors stationary shop. Here’s how it went down; I walked in to her shop, fell in love, made eye contact with her gorgeous holiday card collection and I was in awe. Any girl who knows the value of high quality printing and good photography is a girlfriend of mine. So we got to talking, emailing and now blogging. I like her. You will too. So make sure you check out Lauren’s post for today, titled: “Say Cheese” [...]

  3. Jessica is an outstanding talent!! Excellent tips! If I see one more black-and-white-family-on-the-beach-in-matching-polos portrait, I may scream a little. The pictures Jessica has provided here and exactly what I do enjoy seeing.
