I have a serious problem…. and it’s all I can do to resist temptation to fill my ever growing dependency on a cute, squeezable and lovable creature… the owl!  Everywhere I turn, there is something else “owl” to draw me in and capture my heart.  The thing is, I can exactly pinpoint where my obsession began… no therapy here to figure out the root of my problem!  It was after school (sometime in the 80′s) and the genius advertisers behind Tootsie Roll lollipops grabbed this seven year old’s attention with a simple ad.  It went something like this:

Boy: Mr. Owl, how many licks does it take to get to the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop?

Mr. Owl: A good question. Let’s find out. A One… A.two-HOO…A three..

(crunch sound effect)

Mr. Owl: A Three!

Boy: If there’s anything I can’t stand, it’s a smart owl.

Narrator: How many licks does it take to get to the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop?

(crunch sound effect)

Narrator: The world may never know.

From that very moment, my heart was set on two things…. 1. I wanted an owl and 2.  I wanted to figure out how many licks it took to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop.  Much like the owl, I could never figure it out.  I would either be too tired or forgot half way through counting and bite into the sugary candy center.  And even though a pet owl was never in my future (I think Harry Potter is one lucky boy), I’ve lucked out this year with all the owl creations stocking the shelves.  I guess, I’m not the only one with a crush on Mr. Owl!
