While relaxing on my porch recently, I watched a bee casually buzzing from one flower to another. Not giving it much thought, I kicked my heels up and continued reading my Lucky magazine and sipped on my favorite ice tea. As I breathed in the refreshing summer air, I heard it, “bzzzzzzz.” Suddenly the bee which had captured my attention a few minutes earlier whizzed by my head for another swoop… I jumped up, swatting, screaming and yelping. Within seconds, I went from complete relaxation to a bumbling fool. Is there any way to look graceful as you run from a bee? Surely, Audrey Hepburn or Grace Kelly themselves would look like complete fools as they swatted in fear.
This tiny insect, that makes us all squeal in terror, (yes men, even you) is also the same bug that pollinates our flowers, makes the honey we love and produces bees wax which is used in products such as moisturizers and candles. The honeycomb has been a source of inspiration for fabrics, patterns and more. A bee on stationery is a symbol of prosperity… who doesn’t want to prosper? Maybe the bee gets a bad rap after all? Sure, we’ve all experienced a sting or two in our lives but bees do a lot of good. Not to mention, they can be sophisticated when used in design. So, I have decided, the bee needs some long due respect. But, since Bee Keeper will never be in my future, I think I’ll keep my distance and pay tribute to our little yellow friend the best way I know how, SHOPPING!
