Sophisticated Country

“Sophisticated” and “Country”… two adjectives that you  don’t normally  hear in the same sentence.  Yet, these two words have been popping up together both socially and aesthetically the past few years.   Huh?  How can this be…  they’re polar opposites… aren’t they?  Recently, I’ve been seeing this “look” everywhere I turn.  Take the new plaid trend that took over the fall runways. A good friend is even attending a wedding in Massachusetts this weekend and the dress is “sophisticated country.”  I was even shopping a few days ago and overheard a customer explaining her “look” as “urban country.” So can country style be modern, edgy and hip?

Living in Nashville, I usually try to stay away from anything “country”.  No cowboy boots and ten gallon hats for me!  This North easterner has a rep to protect.  Most Nashvillians will cringe at the slightest suggestion of us living in a “hick” town.  In fact, the only boots and hats we see here are on the tourists.  And after living here for almost eleven years… I have to say Nashville isn’t country at all.  Sure we may have beautiful rolling hills, million dollar horse farms and the Country Music Hall of Fame… but we also have amazing eclectic foods, a beautiful art museum, great shopping and a music scene that rivals anywhere else in the country.  Nashville really is a little bit of everything, which must be why we people love living here so much… there’s a little something for everyone.  Which is what sophisticated and urban country is all about.  It let’s the “city” in you take a deep breath and smell the fresh country air.

What can be more country then vintage grain sacks… each one is unique.

Plaid Booties… I love these, but I’m not hunting “wabbits.”

Plaid Overcoat… I think I need this!

Firewood Flower Art print… I love the farm house in the background.

Brass Horse Necklace… so cheeky and cute!

Urban Country Style book… a friend of mine co-wrote this book and it is fabulous!

  1. Excellent post! I almost see this neo-country style as Americana with just a bit of a French twist. (But not the hairstyle.) Great representations, and I think you’re spot-on in terms of Nashville.
