As I stood in J. Crew last Thursday night, trying on the the most fabulous pair of leather “riding” boots, I was sputtering to my husband all the reasons why this particular pair was an investment. Since my puppy dog eyes weren’t working, I knew I had to pull out all the stops. First of all, they were the perfect shade of cognac, not too dark… not too light. The color made them wearable with both black leggings and skinny jeans… more bang for my buck! Secondly, I could wear them for years to come. They were flat, not the usual heels that I would pick out, so they were comfortable and a sensible option for myself. Thirdly, at just the right height below my knee and a perfect fit on my calves, they were just too good to pass up. But then, something happened to me while I was giving my dissertation to my husband on the necessity of classics in ones wardrobe… I started to believe it myself.
Suddenly, these boots weren’t just an amazing fashion statement, but something that I knew I would really wear for years to come. How could this be… was I becoming practical? No, never! I pride myself on my impracticality in fashion. So what if the shoes make my feet bleed, they are fabulous! So what if I my purse is so large it could be considered carry on luggage, I can fit everything in it! So what if my Burberry trench was expensive, I love it! Then it hit me, many of my choices, besides the blistering shoes, are in actuality practical. They are those investment pieces that I wear over and over again. The pieces that may have been on the expensive side, but I have worn so many times I have gotten my moneys worth many times over. Like the little black cocktail dress I bought 5 years ago, that I have worn to countless weddings and black tie events (not with the same attendees, of course). Or the Louis Vuitton hand bag that will always be in my closet. My Burberry winter scarf which I adore and wear with my black winter jacket year after year. Even the Tory Burch flats I wear to work every day because they are super cute and stylish… are actually really comfortable. I can’t believe it… all this time, I have been investing and I didn’t even know it! Could I be be smarter than I had thought? Too bad I wasn’t buying Apple stock and didn’t know it. On second thought… Quick – someone grab the Jimmy Choo catalog, I need to make another investment!

I agree that you tend to get what you pay for, and in this case, you seem to be making all the right choices. Kudos on that. Camel Burberry? Yes, please. Hot pink, sequined Burberry? Maybe not.
Totally agree. I have a list going of the “must haves” for life and many are the same things you listed above!
