The Good ‘Ole Days

Posted On August 19th, 2009

On a recent eight hour car trip with my parents to the Florida coast, my husband tuned our satellite radio to the 50′s music station.  As we drove down the road listening to the likes of Ricky Nelson and Paul Anka, the mood in the car changed.  The boredom of a never ending car ride seemed to slip away as we listened to my parents sing to the tunes of their generation. They began to hum, tap their feet and reminisce about the good ‘ole days.  They spoke of sock hops and drive-in theaters, black and white T.V.  and Lucille Ball.  I began to imagine my parents, drinking milkshakes and holding hands… eating popcorn at the movies and driving in an old convertible mustang.  It got me wondering, in 40 years will my husband and I have the same nostalgic feelings from our early days when we hear Dave Matthews or Alanis Morrisette.  Will we laugh at the photos of ourselves in our “grunge” period or will we wish flannel shirts were back in style?  Will we crave the sweet taste of fruit roll ups and Ramin noodles and yearn for the days when the Smurfs ruled Saturday mornings and cartoons were hand drawn?   Somehow, it all seems a bit a different.  And while, 1st graders get their own cell phones and twitter takes over the world, I hope we all can grab hold of a simpler time and slow down a bit.  I myself plan to make myself a milkshake, kick up my saddle shoes and watch a bit of I love Lucy.  And maybe… just maybe, I’ll be able to capture a bit of that time..  a time, when boys asked girls out on dates… when holding hands was romantic…  when writing a love letter was sent via the postman, not Twitter…  when apple pies came from the oven, not from a box and when a plane trip was a luxury.  Hmmm… sounds like I’m in need of some Retro Retail Therapy!

Vintage Eyewear… even though I had Lasik surgery a few years ago – I have an overwhelming urge to wear some cat eye glasses.

Milkshake mixer…  who needs Ben and Jerry’s when I can make a milk shake at home… and lowfat – even better!

Rubber gloves… doing the dishes with these won’t seem so bad after all.

Retro timer…  I think this timer will help my apple pies taste better.

Chase and Kiss necklace…  could this necklace be any cuter?

Popcorn tub…  some retro movie fun!

The Farm Chicks cookbook…  I love these girls.  They are fabulous entrepreneurs and have a great retro chic style.

Eyeglass stationery set…  don’t type a letter, write a letter!

Cookbook Painting… I have a love hate relationship with the artist, Holly Farrell.  I love, love,  love her paintings… I hate, hate, hate that I can’t afford one!

Saddle Shoes…  I think some rolled up jeans and a cardigan would complete my outfit!

Retro Stove…  If only my husband would agree to a pink stove… sigh!

Jadeite Cake Stands…  I can think of so many uses for these cake stands.  Let’s see – cupcakes, flower arrangements, appetizers….

Tv Tray… O.K. I confess, we never use our kitchen table and these would be awful handy.

  1. OK–I didn’t intend on commenting on every single post (although I do plan to read each one to get caught up), I just connect with what you’re saying.

Those cake stands are awesome, and it would be the cat’s pajamas to see some as displays for nifty cards in your store. Also, have you heard of fredflare.com? They have lots of cool, retro-inspired items. (Disclaimer: I guest blog for them and love to spread the gospel of the Flare.)
