It’s amazing where the mind wonders sometimes, especially mine. When I recently asked a friend if they were feeling blue, I ended up not even listening to her answer. Instead, all I could think of is what the phrase “feeling blue” actually meant…. great friend I am, huh… I need to work on that! But seriously, why is it we ask someone who seems to be sad, if they are feeling blue? Personally, I like blue… it reminds me of the ocean, a clear sky, my husbands eyes and the perfect little skirt that I have been obsessing over the past few days. Heck, Pantone even named turquoise, the color of the year… it all wasn’t making sense. So I decided to take matters into my own hands and do a bit of research. Turns out, the phrase has a long history in tradition…. go figure! In Greek Mythology, they thought of blue as a sign that Zeus was crying (thus making rain) or angry (thus creating a storm). In the nautical world, it was custom among deep water sailors to fly a blue flag and paint a blue stripe on the hull of the ship after loosing a captain or officer. It all makes sense now! So to my dear friend… ummm, what were you saying?!
