Prentiss Douthit

Posted On February 9th, 2010

I have a soft spot in my heart for stationery designer, Prentiss Douthit.  Besides the fact he is immensely talented, which is a given, we both started our journeys into the stationery world the same year.  His line of papers have been in my shop since the very day I opened my doors and I have loved watching Prentiss’ little line expand into one of the most recognizable stationery companies in the country.

When I first asked Prentiss to be a part of our workspace feature on the site… he replied with his modest sense of humor  Worried his space wouldn’t be as “glamorous” as the others or that he didn’t have a fun story, like his desk being whittled from an old oak that had fallen on his home, I assured him that after knowing him for many years and becoming familiar with his design sensibilities… that I would expect nothing less then a fabulous space from him… and I was right!

Working from his home office rather then the company studio to do much of his design work, Prentiss draws much of his inspiration from the view into his fabulous gardens.  Here, sitting by his window, he can create with no inhibitions while listening to music and enjoy surrounding himself with “beauty and lessons that only nature can reveal.”  While I know Prentiss “cheated” and cleaned up his desk before snapping the photo, his cork board happens to be one of my favorites because it’s real… a true glimpse into his life and designs.  With personal photos, artwork from some of the eight kids he loves (because he can give them back to their parents… he said it, I didn’t), vintage wallpaper and seed packets… you can really see a man who loves his life and what he does.  Another reason, why I just adore my friend, Prentiss!
