Chalk it up to experience!

Posted On November 13th, 2009

Why did I want to be a teacher when I was younger?  Was it to help the youth of our future… nope!  Was it to inspire the impressionable… nope!  Or maybe it was to develop and mold young minds… ummm… no! The answer is easy… I just wanted a chalkboard!  A big black board (not green… yuck) to write and practice my letters on, to use as my scrap paper and draw pretty pictures.  I used to sit in Mrs. Hannanberg’s class and listen to the sound of the chalk tap along the board and dream of one day having my own.  So, when I got a job teaching at a design college 10 years ago, I thought this was finally my time!  I would have my very own chalkboard (by the way, why they hired a 23 year old to teach 18 year olds… I have no idea… why they promoted me to Department Chair after 6 months… I really have no idea).  Much to my dismay, on my first day I discovered all the classrooms had white dry erase boards… noooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!  Why God, Why!?!?  Dry erase markers are no fun!  They get all over your hands… ruin your sleeves and well… they are just plain boring!  I wanted to hold a fresh crisp white piece of chalk.  I wanted a big black fuzzy eraser to wipe the notes from the day away.  But noooooo… instead I got a red dry erase marker that never worked and I could never pull the cap off of.  Ugh!

Since my days of being a professor are over (seriously…. me a professor… so funny), I’m still trying to find a way to bring a chalkboard into my life.  Should I hang one in my kitchen or how about my office?  I do know one thing… the minute I pop a kid out, I’m painting a wall with chalkboard paint!  Although, stealing chalk from your own flesh and blood doesn’t sound very nice… does it?

Lauren

  3. Ahh…I completely agree. I taught (remedial) freshman English when I was but a young thing myself. It was not ideal.

And I love that chalkboard artwork!! It’s intense.
